About size 5 1/2 (slightly oval as favored by Romans) with the nub on the bottom of the band, a specifically Roman feature. Rounded band flared to the line decorated shoulders. Raised oval bezel with hatched top and sides. That motif is associated with gladiators and this may well be the ring of the son of a gladiator. Only a fraction of gladiators were from the ranks of private citizens. The majority were slaves or prisoners, either criminal or military. Those who were not were from the lowest class. As gladiatorial games were staged throughout the entire Roman Empire, the social status, freedom, and respect for gladiators varied. It’s likely that any able to raise a family did so after success in the arena and retirement.
