Decorated throughout with chip carved hound's tooth bands on scorched field. Top with original inked inscription Mr Penrice with the Mcclain's ..... Such inscriptions are typical of Victorian curiosities which were loaned for public exhibition. Fine deep glossy color to the bare wood and considerable evidence of use. The scorched portions with matching surface and uniform color. The Army Roles list Charles Penance for 1875, consistent for service in South Africa in 1879.
