Forged iron 3 3/8” length, 4 5/8” width with curved cutting edge and tapered tangs for two wood handles. A forge weld joining the blade with one tang probably indicates that the blade is of harder carbon steel as was often the case with axe edges. The edge of this example in superior condition. See The Mastermyr Find, A Viking Tool Chest from Gotland, p.13 #54 for a virtually identical example found in Gotland Sweden. That find is a tool chest with carpenter’s tools intact. These would have been used to carve a semi-circular hollow in wood such as for making a wood bowl. One of only three examples in private hands known to us.
