Mahdist period, 1880's for an officer serving the Mad Mahdi. 37 1/4" triple fullered blade decorated both sides overall with thuluth script in repeated panels of accolades. The surface well preserved with some wear to the decoration from use. Expanded terminal bronze cruciform guard. The grip and pommel sheathed in sheet pewter patterned in hound's tooth bands. The grip base with bronze wire wrap. Pewter flaked to the underside of the pommel. Especially large and example for a high ranking member of the Mahdist Army.
