Mahdist War period. An example of this exact type, collected at the Battle of Omdurman, 1898, which ended the war, is shown on the internet. This example is in fine condition having been acquired relatively unused during the war and displays the unique, to us, feature of accompanying tweezer and a needle mounted in the scabbard. The needle is of heavy sail maker type with expanded diamond section tip, useful for mending tents and horse/camel trappings. A further unique feature is that the grip has a short crack at the top which is mended with a lead rivet, peened on the ends. Fine quality and condition.
