Late 19th century. Blackened iron bowl guards with backward rolled edges. Each with hand engraved circular monogram of the owner. Diced black wood grips. 35 1/4’” T back blades, the last 9” flattened and spear pointed. The fortes marked COULEX & CIE KLINGENTHAL AND FRANCE. Contained in their brass mounted leather scabbards (one tip mount lacking). Though outlawed, dueling with swords carried on in France through the beginning of the 20th century. As with the duels among students in Germany, the object was to draw blood, upon which the duel was decided and ended.
