Fischer fig. 136. Northern Congo, Ubangi region. The Ngbandi were preyed upon by slavers with some crossing over to the trade. Tribal wars were precipitated for the purpose of capturing slaves. The Ngbandi throwing knife was feared by the slavers as it could be thrown at distance with deadly effect. One thrown, the warrior reverted to conventional weapons, presumably as the ranks of the enemy were thinned by the casualties of the knife attack. As a result of their sub Saharan location, many Ngbandi were drawn into the Anglo-Sudanese War of 1885. This knife is 23” overall and dates to that period and earlier. Well used and worn condition.
