Precontact. 48 3/4" length with heavy tapered wood haft, stepped to form a two hand grip and flared terminal. Finely worked bun form black stone head with a natural white vein, secured in a fibrous matrix composition. The haft with excellent patina combining slight grain raising with lineal coral scarification finish and slightly mottled deep red/brown color. The head excellent. Some wear to the high points as expected. New Ireland was first contacted by Dutch sailors in 1616 but largely unnoticed until the ill fated 1880 de Rays Expedition. This club dates to the mid era, probably about 1750-1800. Old collection tag attached.
