Stone fig.493. 11 1/4”, straight measurement, blade of finely forged pattern welded iron with sharp recurve and raised false edge. Each side chiseled with geometric bands and panels under brass inlay dentil band. The back with six transverse brass ridges, none lacking. Good uniform texture throughout. Mounted with a newer wood hilt. Stone states that these were not used after the 18th century and by implication and evidence, this example likely dates much earlier, perhaps even 15th century. Extraordinary.
