Thirty Years War (1618-48). Forged iron 2” height, forged iron, approximately heart shaped with three integral prongs which were driven into the hard leather heel of the military boot. The center with two pieced rectangular slots to receive hob nails as used on horse shoes and provide grip on ice. Stable rusted condition. The Thirty Years War was fought throughout Northern Europe (now primarily Germany) where Winter conditions necessitated the use of ice creepers for stability. Only such surviving example we have seen. Recently found in Bavaria.
