From a group furnished by the Barberini family to the Papal Armory. 8 1/2" height. One piece with ridged skull terminating in a backswept "pear stalk." The base with brass rosettes and iron liner rivets. The surface rough from the hammer and originally painted or pitch covered. Hammer finished helmets were sometimes ordered for economy, expedience in time of threat or both. Most have subsequently been polished by collectors. Examples with original hammer finish are now quite rare.
