Italian or Spanish, late 18th century, made for the Ottoman market. 8 ½” swamped muzzle barrel made in two stages with octagonal breech struck with a Spanish maker’s mark and pseudo signatures added. Walnut stock with steel furniture, dummy ramrod. Stepped tail lock with pseudo inscription and well engraved foliate decoration. The side plate and trigger guard engraved to match. Silver escutcheon to the wrist. See Elgood pl.270 for an example of similar form with Balkan lock. The fore stock with small expert repairs. Good quality and seldom found mounted in steel.
