The Mau Mau Revolt, also known by other names, took place between 1952 and 1953 and resulted in some of the greatest atrocities in modern history. It was a struggle for independence of colonial (British) rule by native forces, largely Kikuyu. Primitive weapons and despicable methods and tactics were used. The most popular weapon was the short sword. This example is a classic example from the conflict. Based on the seme, used by both the Maasai and Kikuyu, it is identifiable by its red hide scabbard and construction. Many were made from scavenged auto and truck springs. This example is made of wrought iron in the traditional way, but hastily forged and tool finished.
