Slavery period, early 19th century. 24" broad curved s.e. blade with narrow back fuller, native made. Good quality and showing original finish mixed with mottled gray brown smooth staining. Tapered grip with knob terminal wrapped in leather and cloth tape. Wood scabbard with thick tooled leather band segments to the throat and mid-point. The tip with red leather covering (worn). The body with smooth parchment like hide, slightly shrunk revealing the cloth wrap of the carcass. Uniform very old character throughout. Only a small fraction of African weapons may be dated to this early period.
