By the end of the 11th century, Vikings were being converted to Christianity and assimilated into other European cultures. They were major contributors to the forces of the First Crusade in the last decade of the 12th century. The heart was a symbol for strength in Viking culture. By this time, its meaning was changing to the seat of emotion and love. A metaphor for the soul and things related to human emotion like compassion. This pendant, made in an open face mold, is based strongly on the Viking model in a transitional form embracing the newer concept of the heart as the core of humanity. It is just over 1 ¼” height, professionally refurbished with 24karat gold surface restored on a modern gilt mounted polished leather neck cord, shown separately. Gift boxed with certificate of authenticity.
