7th-10th century AD. Gilt bronze, size 6 1/2 with round bezel supported by flared shoulders and rounded face band with Roman base nub. Remnants of a quartered motif incised. A woman’s ring for the small finger dating to the period of artistic reversal known as the Dark Ages, after the fall of Rome. It is the period of the spread of Christianity and pilgrimages to the Holy Land before the Crusades. This example is lightly surface textured from burial with the gold surface restored.
