Edo Period, C.1700. Cylindrical, 6" height with tapered spout and plug secured with a leather band. The top with a separate plug which can be removed and a wick inserted converting it to an explosive device which can be thrown as a grenade or set, to blow down a door or other obstacle! Black lacquered, munition grade, devoid of an owner's crest and relegated to use by subservients. Surface with evidence of handling and some degradation of the lacquer as expected.
