Iron shaft with spike terminal, divided into three spirally incised segments with transverse bands. Bronze hook and spike terminal decorated with scrolling foliage and flower heads and probably originally gilt. Superior quality, made for elephant handler with the opposing spikes to allow passing between two elephants and keeping them separated if they should move. C.1800 or earlier and very likely used by a handler of war elephants which were used to great effect through the early 19th century. 20 1/2 length. As with many Indian accoutrements, it doubled as the owner's primary weapon.
