Made by the open face mold process. Silver on bronze, shield-shaped with raised rounded edge and trefoil pendant. The field with an irregular curvilinear figure, probably heraldic (from the owner’s coat of arms) distinguishing the owner as of the noble class. Evidently the form is descended from the heart pendants of the Vikings. The Viking era faded in the 11th century with most converting to Christianity. As with other Pagan peoples, many of the Pagan beliefs and symbols carried on as superstitions and in decorative motifs. This example clearly has elements of both cultures. Professionally refurbished with the silver overlay restored, on a modern Sterling silver neck chain for contemporary wear. Gift boxed with a certificate of authenticity.
