North European probably German. Iron head with thick wedge section backswept bit. Shield shaped eye with well-formed peak behind the bit. A short segment of its original haft intact. 4 1/4" height. Dating to the period of full plate armor and designed to deliver a crushing blow like the mace. Storage rust growth, but not excavated. Some original surface showing and minimal pitting. The wood dry and wormed, showing a blow behind the socket, undoubtedly the cause of the break. Likely stored in a castle armory for centuries.
