Starting in Sicily in 1848, revolution spread through Italy, continental Europe to France. Groups of Revolutionaries fought government forces in hope of toppling monarchs and empowering the people. Tens of thousands were killed and only moderate concessions achieved. This sword is typical of those made under pressure, in Germany to meet the threat. French blades, surplus arsenal stock conveniently met the need.
