C.1375-1425, early full plate armor period and corresponding to the "knightly sword" which replaced earlier forms with a uniformly tapering thrusting blade designed to breech armor between the plates as well as penetrate the thinner elements. This dagger as well, was used between the plates of a fallen armored adversary, often referred to as a "dagger of mercy" or misericorde. While all knights would have carried one, surviving examples are exceedingly rare. In fact, much rarer than the knightly swords they accompanied, which themselves are so rare as to be virtually unobtainable for most collectors. 12 1/4" total length. Excavated with a few areas of original surface preserved.
