C.1800-15. Circular, 3 5/8” diameter, black japanned papier-mâché with a scene on the cover of a man in bed, evidently dying, with six figures including a military officer in attendance. The caption: Je donne a mon fils mon coeur et mon epie. “I give to my son, my heart and my sword.” An appropriate subject from the Napoleonic Wars and interesting reference to the custom of passing on family swords. The form corresponds to the pockets of men’s waistcoats of the period.
