Pattern based on the U.S. 1860 staff and field officer's sword and adapted by the French in a variety of services including naval, as early as 1860. Probably served through the Franco-Prussian War and later. Brass hilt with folding side guard (spring catch lacking), the opposite shell with flag splay and fouled anchor. Wire wrapped horn grip. 33" diamond section blade with Maker's name to the forte, shows glossy gray patina. Hilt excellent.
