Type which served in the American Revolution and through the French Revolution, Napoleonic Wars and War of 1812. 27 5.8" curved broad fullered blade. Brass hilt with four slot guard with intricate triple scroll side guard. Faceted one piece backstrap and pommel. Black leather covered grip made without wire wrap. Blade quite crisp with smooth gray patina and a few abrasions at the forte. Hilt shows three short cracks to the bars, minor abrasions and remnants of original silver plate. The four slot guard was a favorite among French Naval officers. The blade length of this example suggests that it was equally suitable for battle on deck and in the field.
