C.1840-50, probably made for ship board use. 32" total length. 16 1/2" barrel with 1 5/8" ringed flared muzzle and finely chiseled medial rings with scalloped floral band. Military type lock marked PALIARD V F A ST ETIENNE. Iron ram rod. Walnut stock of military type with double sling swivels. The butt branded with three marks surrounded by brand punches in the form of a heart. The latter, evidently the work of an idle seaman. The metal crisp and lightly pitted as expected for use at sea.
