This massive sword was made for fighting in full armor. The iron hilt with fluted shell guard, recurved cross guard and thumb ring provide protection for the gauntleted hand. The 34 1/4" blade is meant to inflict significant damage to armor plate and the body it protects. See Swords and Daggers in the Tower of London, pl.41b, dated "late 16th century" for a near identical example. This example was made in the 19th century, perhaps to complete a display for a castle or manor house as copies of this style are quite rare. In fact, this is the first we have encountered. Large and impressive display with fine genuine patina.
