American C.1770. Forged iron, 5" height, with 4-4 rectangular holes, on grooved edge and asymmetrical calkins, to conform to the hoof. Three nails remaining. Ex: Alex’s Bargain Barn, Uncas Conn. Purchased about 1970. Recovered by Alex in the area of Fort Griswold which was built in 1775 at the outbreak of the Revolution to defend New London, a vital port and source of supplies. The defense was defeated in 1781 using information provided to the British by Benedict Arnold. Sound rusted condition. See Neumann page 156. Superior quality and detail indicating an officer of means.
