17th-18th century. Iron, 18 3/8” diameter, domed with applied brass edge. The surface chisel decorated throughout with four annular bands, the widest with 16 panels of calligraphy overlaid in silver on foliage ground. The interior with scrolling foliage enclosing four portraits of noble figures above eight figures of reclining animals. Beautiful display. The silver somewhat faded but the chiseling uniformly crisp throughout. Chiseled decoration is rarer and considered far superior to etched.
