Transitional rapier of smallsword form. A cut and thrust weapon, of typology predating the smallsword which was made for thrusting only. Lavishly gilt hilt finely detailed with slightly asymmetrical shell guards with broad “gathered” reeded borders. Fine gilt wire grip of early rapier form with broad turban knots and heavy chevron wire wrap. 31” flattened diamond section blade with double fullers marked ANTONIO PICINIO twice each side in double fullers. Short ricasso with floral panel and the fullers flanked by floral decoration. Fullers and base panels with some gold overlay remaining. Balance of the blade crisp with two shallow edge nicks. A fine quality early fighting example.
