This fine sword was made for civilian wear. It is of the form generally referred to as “hunting swords” though the vast majority of these were intended for arming civilians in the streets. In fact, game belonged to the crown regardless of where it was found, and hunting was restricted to a chosen few. This example ranks among the largest with 26 5/8” blade and large silver mounted hilt topped with lion head pommel in the finest English tradition. Swords of this quality were worn by wealthy civilians as well as military officers, when not in uniform.
