Oval, 4” length with concave sides of black japanned papier-mâché. The lid very intricately inlaid with abalone (mother of pearl) in baroque designs. Two tiny pieces out. Excellent with remnants of aromatic tobacco. These were used to carry snuff or pipe tobacco interchangeable. The skill to shape abalone into these intricate and complex forms is incredible. See Neumann page 245 & 246 for examples.
