10" height with olive form body, ear shaped grips and flared neck. Decorated in full relief with male figure stretched across the entire top, his garment modeled in relief comprising the shoulder of the vessel. His head is raised and he wears an elaborated headdress. The garment and headdress both suggest that he is a priest A monkey perches on his shoulder and supports the neck of the vessel. Decorated in characteristic grape colored geometry. The Chancay are largely known by their pottery of which this is a fine example in excellent preservation without restoration. The appeal of the vessels to collectors and museums is rated largely (other than condition) on the extent, complexity and imagination of the figural decoration. On that basis, we found no example sold in the past several years as recorded on the internet which compared to this.
