The original, Italian C.1570-80 of elegant form embossed in high relief with the story of David and Goliath. On the right side, David raises Goliath’s huge sword above the fallen giant. Opposite, David has severed the head and stands with sword raised over the corpse. The electrotype process, invented in 1838, produced an exact replica, accurate to the smallest detail, in copper of an original. Before photography was perfected in the 1860s, such replicas were made by museums as study pieces which were circulated among them. The original of this helmet, yet unidentified and possibly no longer in existence, was copied by the process in a European museum about 1860. This is that copy.
