Mahdist period C.1880. 26 1/2" length. Iron head with tapered, elegantly recurved back spike and crescent form bit. Iron spear point above and iron ferrule below. Matching iron ferrule to the butt. Each element skillfully decorated in silver koftgari including stylized foliage and curvilinear motifs. The bit with additional band of etched thuluth calligraphy surrounding the central panel. The haft encased in iguana skin. Skin slightly shrunk as expected. The silver slightly weak on the ferrules and spear point but virtually complete on the head. Wonderful age character.
