This iron spur with its sharply angled rolled crest bow, is from the William Randolph Hearst collection with collection tag. The integral long octagonal shank, tapers to the 2/3 point then swells to form the rowel arms, with expanded disk form terminals anchoring the axle. Fifteenth century spurs evolved with horse armor and the shanks grew progressively longer to contact the horse beneath the flank protection. This example represents the form at about the midpoint of evolution.
