Mahdist period, early 1880’s. 55 ¼” length. Wood haft entirely covered in white and blue trade bead work in a zig zag pattern which spirals around as the beads are broader than they are thick. Conical iron base shoe. The iron head of tapered form with elongated conical point over tapered bolster with chisel raised barbs to opposing edges and pair of reverse barbs to the base. The conical point and tapered bolster are non traditional features specifically designed to penetrate the thick red wool British Infantry coat. Traditional spears had edged leaf shaped blades which were ineffective. Expected ageing with a few small spots of beadwork lacking.
