Direct copy of the Japanese type 32 with 31 1/2” broad fullered blade. Etched serial # to the forte, bright with original preservative, mostly run to the point. The guard, grip and scabbard, forest green and the back strap, khaki. From a well-known group which was brought out of China about 1980 by an English dealer and to our knowledge, the only such group to ever reach the market. Copied from the Japanese type 32 produced 1899-1936, these surely served against Japan in the Second Sino-Japanese War of 1937-45, and perhaps the first, 1894-5. The later action was fought on Chinese soil as well as southeast Colonial Asia. American support started in 1937 with advisors and led to the establishment of the legendary Flying Tigers. The story of these swords is yet to be fully understood.
