C.1800-early 19th century and probably French, Napoleonic period. Bronze (brass) hilt with three bar side guard and banded pommel. Wire wrapped black japanned wood grip, surface worn. 19 3/4” straight broad fullered blade. Blade gray with minor oxidation speckles. Hilt with good patina. Swords such as this were made for the sons of officers who were expected to continue in the military tradition. Those officers generally came from noble families. Very rarely encountered.
