Middle Bronze Age, C.1500-1000 BC. 13 5/8" total length. The spatulate shaped blade with swelled medial and slightly concave edges providing a sharp cutting edge on heavy core. The base of "spade form" to seat into a bone or wood hilt, long since perished. Few examples exist outside museums and the collections of noble families among who the collecting of antiquities, natural history specimens and curiosities was fashionable in the 19th century. The disbursement of those collections, in England for death taxes and Northern Europe, from financial depressions has provided the few specimens on the collector's market. This example has been in our own collection for decades.
