Napoleonic Wars period. Made by Runkel Solingen (recorded 1795-1808) and so marked on the 32” broad fullered blade. Additional foliage decoration with remnants of gold. Modeled on the British 1788 cavalry saber, swords of this type served the hussars of Poland, the Germanic states as well as French. Hussars were specialized cavalry who, based on the Hungarian model, itself modeled after the Ottoman, valued agility and maneuverability over protection. Their horses, weapons and uniforms were all chosen to optimize those qualities. The men were selected for superior ability. This sword was made to serve a hussar in the Napoleonic Wars.
