Napoleonic Period C.1785-90. Iron hilt with dished oval guard, recurved corss guard with broad terminals. iron grip and swelled pommel. Significant original blued finish faded to gray remaining. 32 3/4" spadroon form blade profusely decorated with military and heraldic motifs related to the noble family which the regiment served. Blade excellent. Private regiments supporting the Royal military under a variety of arrangements were in abundance. Many had individually styled arms, some of which survive in quantity and others quite are. Most, such as this example, have lost their identity and no comprehensive study identifying them has been done. This example represents one of the more exotic forms and almost certainly served in the Napoleonic Wars as these regiments were specifically formed for that service.
