Standard pattern with gilt brass hilt of the form used since the 1770s and formalized with the folding side guard as on this example. Silver sheathed grip with wire wrap pattern. 31 3/4" broad fullered blade decorated first half with Royal Arms, family arms of the owner, crowned GR cipher, and scrolling foliage. Blade mostly smooth with some black oxidation speckles. The decoration weak as applied. Hilt shows good patina with considerable gold in protected areas. The folding guard functionally excellent. The silver grip covering unusually complete and undamaged.Original scabbard lacks the tip mount and a few inches of leather, but sound dry and tight. Classic pattern which served through the Napoleonic Wars and War of 1812.
