Late 16th early 17th century. Forge iron as is typical for these. The head with crescent form blade, angled fore spike and triangular back spike. 80" length. Following the 1622 massacre of English colonists in Virginia by Powhatan Indians, The Tower of London shipped (among other weapons) 1000 brown bills for their protection. At least two similar bills have been recovered at Jamestown and are illustrated in Arms and Armor in Colonial America, pl. 106.
