Brass hilt with thickened edge symmetrical side guards, the left folding. Deep relief foliage decoration to the guard center, quillon and vase form pommel. Copper wire wrapped grip. 29 1/2" broad fullered s.e. blade sparsely etched with foliage sprigs. Blade shows gray aging with mottled frosty to light pitting. This is a fighting sword of the same pattern as the 1796 Infantry Officers, distinguished by its copper rather than silver grip wrap and thicker proportions of the hilt elements. Unlike Commissioned Officers, Non Commissioned Officers (Sergeants and Warrant Officers) fought along side regular enlisted troops.
