Late Dynastic, 716-30 BC. 4 1/4" length, a waterfowl, in crouching posture with the head drawn back on its long neck and flared tail (end chipped). The back inlet for attachment of wings or perhaps to a larger object such as a sarcophagus lid. The attachment peg intact. Surface textured from burial and showing its carved finish with remnants of gesso which was originally detailed in multi colors. Waterfowl which inhabited the Nile delta were an important source of food in ancient Egypt.
