Well known type used in the Venetian Republic which dominated the North of the Italian Peninsula as well as southern Balkans and west side of the Adriatic. This example provincially produced true to style and construction. Large iron hilt with double claw guard, ring side guard with corrugated plate under. The elements layered and riveted together as is correct. Iron wire wrapped. Spirally fluted spherical pommel. 31 5/8" flattened diamond section blade. Storage rusted throughout with some heavy pitting toward the point. Evidently blacksmith made with an imported blade, probably for a village militia serving Venice in exchange for protection.
