Ethiopia, 18th-19th century. Bronze, 9 1/8” in height, made in three pieces by the lost wax process. The top model is a highly stylized and pierced cross with further pairs of crosses to the sides. Rectangular section grip with langets sandwiching the cross and the rectangular bottom above a cross finial. Dark patina and surface encrustation from use. The three-piece construction is a significant indicator of its great age. The Coptic Church was founded in the 5th century, evolving as a separate branch of Christianity. It is claimed that the Ark of the Covenant, the box containing the Ten Commandment tablets, is kept by the Coptic Church in Ethiopia.
