Blacksmith made with 17 1/2" spear shaped d.e. blade, patterned after US and Southern gladius swords, but of fine fighting weight. Iron cross guard with short spatulate terminals.. One piece carved wood grip with "pistol grip" terminal and brass base ferrule. Blade shows gray patina, a little frosty oxidation only. Hilt sound with good patina. The Confederate government offered a bounty for every bowie produced, however knives of this type were generally purchased directly by soldiers. Knives of this form are often called "Arkansas Toothpicks".
