2 1/2” length of black japanned papier-mâché. The lid inlaid with a pewter border and central medallion (complete) under the varnish surface. Excellent preservation with remnants of snuff inside. These were used to carry snuff or pipe tobacco interchangeable. Pewter foil inlay on a black japanned body is the most common construction and takes many forms. See Neumann page 245 & 246 for examples.
